The African film industry is buzzing once again! The organizers of the Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards (AMVCA) have officially pulled back the curtain on the 12th edition, and the stakes have never been higher.
From the appointment of a legendary "Mama Nollywood" to a nomination list that shows just how much African cinema has evolved, here is everything you need to know about the AMVCA 2026.
A Legend at the Helm: Joke Silva Named Head Judge
In a move that has received a standing ovation across the continent, veteran actress and industry icon Joke Silva has been appointed as the Head Judge for the 12th AMVCA.
Taking over the mantle to lead the jury, Silva emphasized that this year’s awards are about more than just popularity—they are about the depth of craft.
"It is a platform that recognizes and celebrates excellence... African stories matter," Silva stated during the announcement.
The Heavy Hitters: Who Led the Nominations?
The nominations, which were hosted by AMVCA winner Chimezie Imo on March 29, revealed a tight race at the top. Two films are currently neck-and-neck, dominating the conversation:
‘Gingerrr’ – 9 Nominations
‘The Herd’ – 9 Nominations
‘To Kill A Monkey’ – 8 Nominations
‘My Father’s Shadow’ – 7 Nominations
Acting Categories: Veterans vs. The New Wave
The "Best Lead" and "Best Supporting" categories are stacked with talent.
Sola Sobowale continues her reign, securing nods in both lead and supporting categories.
Genoveva Umeh earned her first-ever Best Lead Actress nomination for her stellar performance in The Herd.
Lateef Adedimeji, Uzor Arukwe, and Bimbo Akintola are also among the big names vying for the golden statuettes this year.
What’s New This Year?
The AMVCAs are expanding their reach to ensure the whole continent is represented. For the first time, we see the introduction of:
Best Indigenous Language – North Africa
Best Indigenous Language – Central Africa
Out of the 32 categories, 18 will be decided by the Joke Silva-led jury, 11 are open to public voting, and 3 are special recognition awards (including the prestigious Lifetime Achievement and Trailblazer honors).
